Earlier this week ourselves and many other gaming news outlets reported on a supposed Red Dead Redemption 2 leak which suggested that story DLC was being added into the game.
A Reddit user by the name of “throwaway11113454” claimed to known a concept artist at Rockstar Games, and wrote in a now-removed post: “[The friend] is working on Red Dead Redemption 2 story DLC it’s in the middle of development right now and is slated for a release of Q1 2020.”
The OP claimed the DLC was “alien-centered like people have rumored (this was hinted by the UFO Easter egg),” and that you’d play as Arthur Morgan.
You know what I’m going to say next, right?
Sadly, the ‘leak’ just turned out to be a downright lie, as evidenced by the user who came up with it all.
In a new Reddit post, throwaway11113454 claims the whole thing was nothing more than a social experiment.
“1. There is no dlc for Red Dead Redemption 2 or remake of the first game as far as I know,” writes the user.
“2. This was an experiment I have always wanted to do regarding the spreading of rumors in video game culture. I’ve been thinking about this for a while and wondering how I was going to do it, then I saw red dead online was basically being ignored (most likely not, but the fans are in the dust about it, including me) so this was basically a good starting point for me.
“So first I thought about here there were a lot of alien references in RDR 2’s story mode, so I started my ‘leak’ on that. I made up a somewhat believable story that my ‘friend from rockstar’ told me. (Real original right?) then I put in small details I thought in my head would make sense…
“I expected it to be ignored and the next day I open my reddit and I see the biggest notification list I have ever had!”
The user admits they felt they had to come clean after realising they’d gotten “too many peoples’ hopes up.”
Well, there goes the dream…
