Rumours of a brand-new RPG set in the world of Harry Potter have seen circulating since 2018, with recent rumblings suggesting a reveal was planned for E3 2020 before its cancellation. If this is true, we could be expecting the game’s announcement any day now, which would make sense considering it’s now rumoured to be launching as soon as 2021.
It’s believed that the RPG is being worked on by Avalanche Software, whose previous work includes Disney titles including Infinity and Toy Story 3. (We reported on a potential nod to this earlier this year).
According to Bloomberg, the RPG will be an open-world Harry Potter title, with a focus on Hogwarts and the surrounding areas known from the books and movies. It’s claimed that the game won’t be revealed during August’s DC FanDome event, which is Warner Bros’ alternative to E3. Instead, it’s expected to come sometime after.
Bloomberg also notes that game is scheduled to be a next-gen release, aiming to be on store shelves sometime in 2021.
As with all rumours and leaks, it’s important to take this with a pinch of salt for now. If you missed the big Harry Potter leak of 2018, let me fill you in.
October 2018 saw some leaked footage of what appeared to be an RPG set in the magical world of Harry Potter appear on Reddit. The video appeared to show off some gameplay and cinematics captured by someone claiming to be a game tester.
Though the leak remains unverified to this day, Warner Bros. quickly took action against the video, copyright claiming the footage. Really, that’s indicative of one thing and one thing only – that the footage was probably real.
The leak also included the following game description, stating: “Set in the 19th Century (1800’s) Wizarding World, this 3rd person open-world action RPG game centers around your character with unique abilities who has eared [sic] a late acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
“You are a newly arrived 5th year student to Hogwarts that demonstrates a latent gift for magic with a unique ability to track and identify remnants of a pottant [sic] ancient power.
“Upon arrival, strange events begin to materialize In the Forbidden Forrest [sic] and trouble begins o [sic] brew within the castle walls.”
The description, which can be read in full on this archived Reddit post, goes on to add: “On your quest you will craft potions, master new spells, and discover fantastical beasts. You will battle Dark Wizards, Goblins, and other supernatural enemies and uncover the truth about your destiny – the Fate of the Wizarding World lies in your hands.”
Could this be the RPG we’re getting?
