Crystal Dynamics has announced it is working on the next entry in the Tomb Raider franchise, as revealed during Epic Games’ State of Unreal 2022 event.
Crystal Dynamics will be working on the next Tomb Raider, having taken a break from the series in its last entry to work on Marvel’s Avengers. However, due to the emphasis on multiplayer and live-service in that title, it felt as though the developer was out of its element as a radical departure from the single-player titles it has been known for.
Check the video below for the announcement. The Tomb Raider reveal occurs at around the 36 minute mark.
The next Tomb Raider game will be developed using Unreal Engine 5, making Crystal Dynamics the next major developer to move to the high-tech design engine. Just last month, CD Projekt Red announced the next Witcher game would be developed using Unreal Engine 5.
THIS IS VERY EXCITING
Tomb Raider franchise manager Dallas Dickinson has spoken briefly about the game, saying it’ll be a “high quality cinematic action-adventure experience”. However, no gameplay or footage has been shown of it yet, so it’s likely very early in development.

The last time we saw Lara in a major video game release was in 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. However, multiple other projects are also in the works, including a mobile game, a movie sequel starring Alicia Vikander, and even a live experience.
