The Borderlands movie is going full steam ahead, and has just gotten itself a notable director in Eli Roth.
The director, best known for his horror movies, isn’t the only big name attached to the project. Producers Avi Arad (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse), Ari Arad, and Erik Feig have also signed on, along with Emmy-winning Chernobyl writer, Craig Mazin, suggesting we really are in for a wild ride.
In a press release from Lionsgate, Roth issued the following statement:
“I’m so excited to dive into the world of Borderlands and I could not be doing it with a better script, producing team, and studio. I have a long, successful history with Lionsgate – I feel like we have grown up together and that everything in my directing career has led to a project of this scale and ambition.
“I look forward to bringing my own energy, ideas, and vision to the wild, fun, and endlessly creative world of the game. Randy Pitchford and everyone at Gearbox have been incredibly supportive of my ideas – it really feels like a perfect storm of creators coming together. We are out to make a new classic, one which the fans of the game will love, but also one which will find new audiences globally.”
There’s no word on when we can expect to have our butts in seats at the Borderlands movie, but it’s likely to be 2021 or 2022.
In other video game movie news, the Uncharted movie is reportedly set to begin filming next month. The idea comes from the project’s lead actor, Tom Holland, who will be playing Nathan Drake in his early years.
In an interview with IGN, Holland revealed: “When I sat down with [Sony Pictures Chairman] Tom Rothman and we were talking about video games, and I was like ‘Oh, I’ve just finished Uncharted.’ And he was like ‘Well, why don’t you play Nathan Drake?’
“I remember being like, ‘I would do anything to play Nathan Drake. Please, that would be amazing.’ So yeah, we start shooting in like four weeks. Mark Wahlberg is going to be amazing as Sully. The stunt department that we have out there in Berlin have done an amazing job already, prepping the stunts, and it’s going to be an exciting one.”
