Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Zombies Map Is “400% Larger” Than Nuketown

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 gets its Apocalypse Z DLC today, July 9, and one of its most exciting new additions is – of course – more zombies.

In a recent livestream, developers from Treyarch talked everything zombie-related, and explained how the DLC and Nuketown work together.

The game’s lead writer Craig Houston said: “Nuketown’s always been a fun map in the zombies story. While originally it was a very small map, it had elements in it that were hinting at something much bigger.”

Game designer Mark Maestas said this updated version of Nuketown is around “400% larger” than it was before, offering up more areas to explore – including spaces both above and below ground.

“We want players to feel the nostalgia of coming back to Nuketown,” explained senior producer Danny Donaho. “We do that with those original spaces. But there’s so much more to experience now that we’ve added new features, new mechanics, new enemy types.”

The new map has a heavy focus on a research facility run by the Broken Arrow organisation, because what zombie apocalypse doesn’t have a research facility?

Interestingly, Treyarch has teased an updated and moddable version of the game’s Ray Gun at the facility, along with a whole host of other experimental weapons for you to play around with.

Along with new weapons, the DLC will also introduce new zombie enemies named the Nova 6 Bomber and the Jolting Jack. Even better is the addition of Luna, a wolf who can be summoned to your side to aid in the battle with the new Blood Wolf Bite power-up.

“This is one of the biggest maps we’ve ever done in terms of narrative Easter eggs,” Houston said. “There’s a lot of ancillary characters that you’ve met in the past, or if you’ve not met them you’ve at least heard about them, and they’re gonna pop up in various ways throughout the map.”

Houston said we can also expect “a lot of pain, a lot of joy, and maybe a few tears.”
