CD Projekt Red earned over $304 million in profit throughout 2020, according to a preview of its annual earnings [via PC Gamer].
The figures were published to the company’s investor-focused Twitter account, which revealed both CDPR’s consolidated sales revenue and consolidated net profit.
It’s needless to say that CDPR’s profit margins are surprising, especially considering Cyberpunk 2077’s disastrous launch. However, the company previously reported that CP2077’s development costs were recuperated through pre-orders alone. Nevertheless, the company seems to have gained from the RPG, regardless of its failure to launch. For context, The Witcher 3 brought in revenues of around $90 million, making 2020 the company’s most successful financial year. However, according to industry analyst Daniel Ahmad on Twitter, CDPR’s revenue could suffer a sharp drop:
“Of course the real question is whether CDPR will see a similar trend post Witcher 3 (Continued strong sales) or whether there will be a sharper revenue drop in 2021 and beyond. “
Cyberpunk 2077’s turbulent launch is sure to affect the company in some way. Especially considering the fact that the game isn’t currently available on the PlayStation Store.
Is There Any Hope For Cyberpunk 2077?
Despite also having to issue refunds, there’s still hope for the game. Last month’s 1.2 patches brought a bunch of performance enhancements to the game, followed by this month’s 1.21 hotfix. Both updates should resolve some of the game’s more prominent issues, which affect progression and playability. Despite the success of both patches, Cyberpunk 2077 is still absent from the PlayStation Store.
Who knows, perhaps things are looking up for CD Projekt Red. CDPR’s SVP of businesses development has said that its game won’t be marketed until “much closer” to their release date [via PC Gamer]. Hopefully, this might mean that some lessons have been learned… Especially when it comes to big-budget projects!
