Cyberpunk 2077 Is No Longer Eligible For The Game Awards 2020

Following on from its most recent delay (again), it has been confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will no longer be eligible for The Game of the Year Awards 2020. (Note that it can still be considered by other awards ceremonies and outlets, just not The Game Awards 2020).

Despite developers stating that Cyberpunk 2077 will suffer no further delays after it recently went “Gold”, the delay by three weeks now pushes the game back to December 10th, meaning that the cut-off date for the annual The Game Awards has passed.

It was only at the beginning of the month when the official Twitter account for Cyberpunk 2077 confidently replied to a fan that “No more delays are happening”.

Producer and host of The Game Awards Geoff Keighley confirmed the news on Twitter stating “Cyberpunk 2077 will first be eligible at next year’s Game Awards.

If Cyberpunk 2077 had managed to stick to its previous release date of November 15th, it would ‘just’ made the cut-off date to be a nominee for Game of the Year at The Game Awards, but now the title must wait until the 2021 ceremony.

With the release of the next-gen consoles just a mere two or so weeks away, it will be interesting to see who wins the prestigious Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2020.

Sure Cyberpunk 2077 was no sure-fire bet this year, but now that it’s missed that cut-off date, it certainly leaves the possibilities a little more wide-open for its competitors.

When the most recent delay was announced, the developers expressed the challenges of not only the current pandemic climate, but also the difficulties of testing Cyberpunk 2077 for nine different platforms as the reason for the delay.

The biggest challenge for us right now is shipping the game on current-gen, next-gen and PC at the same time, which requires us to prepare and test 9 versions of it…while working from home,” said CDPR.
