It seems that everyone’s favourite video game lizard Gex is back, kind of, as a demo for a sequel that never came out has been released online.
When we say Gex is back, we of course mean his cool and radical son (probably?) Gex Jr. But obviously, Gex Jr. never existed. For some reason, a demo from a 2001 build of an unreleased spinoff game has appeared online.
Posted by justz00t, the demo shows an incredibly short level featuring basically Gex but in clothes that only boardroom executives think look cool. Of course, Jr. has a number of classic witty references to dish out like “I’m your father, Luke.” There are also a few collectible cans of soda to acquire, that make a satisfying gulping sound when you pick them up.
You’re also able to jump around the level, and all of the platforming seems to work at minimum. Justz00t also released the demo available to download on Archive.org. A scan of the disc the demo is from is viewable there. And it also appears that game developer ImageBuilder are responsible for the demo.
On Archive.org, justz00t noted that “This demo was legally purchased and is provided here for historical preservation purposes only. It was not hacked, stolen or revealed by breaching of any contractual obligations I am subject to.” So it literally just seems like justz00t happened upon this unreleased gem.
Why this game was scrapped we might never know. But at any rate we should count it as some kind of gift.
