Fan Theory Says Into The Spider-Verse 2 Will Feature This Live-Action Spider-Man

Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 has just gotten a release date, along with a whole load of fan theories.

Hoping to cash in on the blockbuster behemoth that was Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the sequel is calling on an obscure Spidey alumni.

Blowing wall-crawling fans away in 2018, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a surprise hit of last year and a charming cartoon tale. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still yet to introduce the fan-favourite Miles Morales, Into the Spider-Verse made him the de facto lead as the young vigilante suited up alongside a much older Peter Parker.

An all-star cast of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Lily Tomlin and Nicolas Cage was just one of Into the Spider-Verse‘s many highlights. Now, fans think they’ve worked out that Shinji Todo could reprise his role as Japanese Spider-Man.

For those who are rightly scratching their heads and saying “eh?”, Japanese Spider-Man is better known as Takuya Yamashiro and starred in his own 1970s TV series. Way back when, a lucrative licensing deal between Japan’s Toei Company and Marvel Comics Group created a live-action series. This is all well and good, but how does it tie to Into the Spider-Verse?

When the official Spider-Verse Twitter announced the sequel, the account included a gif of flickering Spider-Man logos. Among them, fans are convinced they spotted Takuya Yamashiro’s logo.

According to Digital Spy, there’s a brief flicker that alludes to Japanese Spider-Man.

Toei’s three-year deal saw the creation of the Spider-Man series, following a motorcycle racer who sees a UFO crash to Earth. Things go frankly batsh*t crazy from there as Takuya finds the last survivor of Planet Spider in the wreck and his father (a space archeologist) is killed by the villainous Professor Monster.

The young hero is tasked with continue Planet Spider’s legacy, is injected with alien blood, and then gains some spidey superpowers. As well as this, he gets to pilot the spaceship that can also turn into a giant battling robot.

Elsewhere, one of the logos appears to hint at fan-favourite villain Mr. Negative. Given the character’s starring role in Insomniac’s Spider-Man game, he could be the next big bad of the Spider-Verse.

A largely forgotten ’70s character might seem a little out-there, but in a world where we’ve seen the robot-piloting Penni Parker and Spider-Ham, Takuya Yamashiro isn’t even the most unusual character we’ve come across.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is swinging into our lives on April 8, 2022.
