With Final Fantasy 16 finally arriving later this month, the actor behind its protagonist Clive has spoken about how the character saved his life.
Thanks to a successful demo, Final Fantasy 16 cannot come soon enough. With a June 22 release date, there is only a matter of days before players can dive into the world of Valisthea. To celebrate the upcoming launch, Clive’s voice actor spoke about his experience making the game.
Final Fantasy 16 Voice Actor Says Clive Saved His Life
In an interview on the Kinda Funny Games Youtube channel, actor Ben Starr was asked if he had taken any “outside inspiration” for the character of Clive. What followed was an emotional but inspirational story.
Starr revealed that his father passed away during the making of FF16 but his grief allowed him to transform his performance.
“Listen, let’s get real,” Starr begins. “So this game means a lot to me… my dad died during the making of this game, and there’s a lot of loss that Clive goes through, and I’m sorry to get heavy but it’s true – it’s amazing how much this game allowed me to process that loss into something good and creative.”
“The team were incredibly good at allowing me to be as expressive as I possibly could,” Starr continues. “So yeah, when you’re hearing some of that stuff, that’s kind of real.
“Clive saved my life. This game saved my life. The last time I ever spoke to my dad was on the way to recording this game. He was the guy who first brought me Final Fantasy 8. He was the guy who supported me through, you know… who I look up to.”
Starr goes on to reveal that if it wasn’t for his father, he perhaps wouldn’t have been here playing the role of the protagonist in one of the biggest gaming franchises.
“I’m trying to vocalize it and get it out there as much as possible because I want him to be remembered, and he’s so much a part of this game and a part of the fabric of who Clive is.” He says. “I wouldn’t be here doing this if it weren’t for him, because he brought me that game, and he would’ve changed my life in that way.”
Starr finished by saying that his father is as much a part of Final Fantasy 16 as he is.
Final Fantasy 16 will launch on June 22 exclusively to PlayStation 5.
