Finally there’s some good news in 2020, as it’s been confirmed that the next Final Fantasy game is still in the works. Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which launched earlier this year, is only a part of the original game, meaning Remake 2 (Remark Part 2? Remake 2.0?) is still on the horizon.

Though it’s been confirmed that the game is in production, updates have been thin on the ground over the last few months during the coronavirus pandemic. If you were worried the game’s production had been halted, then I have good news, as it’s apparently still going ahead – albeit from home.
Speaking with The Guardian, producer Yoshinori Kitase confirmed the developers are “still making the next game via remote working,” though he did admit that “performance will temporarily drop below 100% efficiency.”

What this likely means is that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 is likely to take longer than expected to launch. There’s not yet any inkling of a release window for the game, but if work is happening slower than expected, it seems likely we’re going to be waiting longer.

Square Enix shipped the 7 Remake at what was possibly the most uncertain time of the pandemic, and though the game sold phenomenally well, it’s believed that physical sales could have been higher had the game not shipped when it did. Based on this, it would make sense for Square Enix to want to take its time with the second part of the game.
It’s still not known how many parts Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be split into.

Meanwhile, Square Enix has confirmed plans to reveal “several” new games over the summer, suggesting we’re in for a long, hot one. During a recent shareholder meeting [via No Investment, No Life/Gematsu], the company explained that the global coronavirus pandemic has put a spanner in the works of their planned game reveals.
The company said: “We’ll be announcing new titles individually as the timing permits. Several will debut around July to August.”
