It’s officially happening. After over a decade of silence, rumors, and anticipation, Rockstar Games is taking us back to Vice City. The next entry in the franchise promises the biggest technical leap we’ve seen yet, along with a modern satirical take on the Sunshine State.

Here is the essential breakdown of what is actually confirmed.

Release date and platforms

Rockstar has scheduled the launch for May 26, 2026. As is tradition for the studio, console players get first dibs. It’s releasing on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on day one.

There is currently no word on a PC version, though history suggests a port will likely follow a year or so later.

The setting

We are heading to the fictional state of Leonida, which is Rockstar’s version of modern-day Florida. The map is described as the studio’s largest and most immersive open world to date. Key locations include:

• Vice City, reimagined for the modern era

• Surrounding coastal towns and tropical islands

• Extensive wetlands and rural regions

The protagonists

For the first time in the series, a female protagonist takes a central role. The story focuses on a criminal duo, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval. The narrative draws heavy inspiration from Bonnie and Clyde, centering on their partnership and survival. Unlike GTA V, which juggled three distinct lives, this story appears tightly focused on just these two.

Gameplay direction

While Rockstar is keeping the full gameplay loop under wraps, they have confirmed a few major pillars:

• Expanded world interaction: Expect more buildings you can enter and higher interactivity with the environment

• Next-gen AI: NPC behavior is more detailed, making the world feel less like a backdrop and more like a living population

• Satirical tone: The game continues the tradition of parodying modern American culture

The 2022 leak

In September 2022, the gaming world saw one of the biggest security breaches in history when unfinished footage of GTA 6 leaked online.

Rockstar confirmed the footage was real but emphasized it was early development material. The clips showed early tests of robbery mechanics, police systems, and the Vice City setting, but did not reflect the final polish of the game.

What we are still waiting on

Rockstar is holding several cards close to their chest. We are still missing:

• Extended, unedited gameplay footage

• Concrete plans for the future of GTA Online

• Confirmation of a PC release window

• Details on post-launch expansions

The bottom line

Grand Theft Auto VI is a next-generation open-world crime epic focused on a duo fighting to survive in a neon-soaked Vice City. With a 2026 release date locked in, it is positioned to be the most significant entertainment launch of the decade.

We just have to wait a little longer to play it.
