Here Are The First Backwards Compatible Games To Get Xbox Series X|S FPS Boost

Microsoft has announced the first batch of Xbox One legacy titles to get a framerate boost for Xbox Series X|S. The news was announced on Xbox.com by Senior Program Manager at Xbox, Paul Eng.

In the post, Eng said: “When we were designing Xbox Series X|S, we knew we wanted to continue our commitment to compatibility we started back in 2015, enabling gamers to play their favourite titles from past generations on the new consoles […]

The backward compatibility team has developed FPS Boost, which employs a variety of new methods for nearly doubling (and in a few instances, quadrupling) the original framerate on select titles. Higher, steadier framerates make games visually smoother, resulting in more immersive gameplay.

Xbox One games in general will perform better on the Xbox Series X|S, but Microsoft has gone that extra step further to ensure a super-smooth experience when playing select last-gen titles.

Sadly not all games will be able to feature FPS Boost. The blog posts notes: “While not applicable to all games, these new techniques can push game engines to render more quickly for a buttery smooth experience beyond what the original game might have delivered due to the capabilities of the hardware at the time.”

The first batch of backwards compatible titles to benefit from the “FPS Boost” consists of the following:

  • Far Cry 4
  • Watch Dogs 2
  • UFC 4
  • Sniper Elite 4
  • New Super Lucky’s Tale.

Eng states that New Super Lucky’s Tale can now perform at 120fps, while UFC 4 now performs at 60fps.

However, that’s not all, because as more titles get added to the FPS Boost. You’ll be able to go to “Manage Game”, select the title, and in the new “Compatibility Options” you can toggle between FPS Boost and turn Auto HDR on or off.
