Kirby Wins A Grammy Award

The 64th Annual Grammy Awards took place earlier this week, and our round friend Kirby managed to take home an award.

When I say ‘Kirby’, I don’t actually mean the pink menace himself. The honour actually goes to 8-Bit Big Band, a musical orchestra by Charlie Rosen and Jake Silverman which does instrumental arrangements of classic video game music.

They won Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella for their rendition of “Meta Knight’s Revenge” from 1996’s Kirby Superstar. You can have a listen to it below.

This isn’t the first time a video game soundtrack has won a Grammy, either. Back in 2010, Christopher Tin won Best Instrumental Arrangement with Vocalist(s) for “Baba Yetu” in Civilization 4. Journey composer Austin Wintory also had a nomination in 2013 for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.

Hopefully this kickstarts a trend of more video game soundtracks earning big awards like Grammys. There are so many great scores to games that they deserve to be celebrated in this way.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land launched a couple of weeks ago and has been enjoying great success in the UK. It held the number one spot in the physical sales chart for two weeks in a row, releasing alongside Ghostwire Tokyo and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.
