Kojima Begins Work On Next Project, But Don’t Expect A Horror Game

Now that Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding has dropped, the creator has already begun teasing his next project on social media. Following the star-studded sci-fi (sort of?) hit, fans were eagerly hoping Kojima would turn his talents to the horror genre. The mastermind was once set to spearhead the revival of the iconic Silent Hill series, but thanks to a falling out with Konami, Silent Hills was canned.

Those hoping for a horror game from Kojima might be disappointed in some of his recent tweets though, as the industry icon’s next game is looking likely to be another sci-fi story.

On Twitter just a few weeks ago, Kojima shared an image of a desk littered with books, writing: “Maybe I was too tired I slept over this morning. I wanted to go see Last Christmas 1st thing in the morning but realized today was Christmas Eve. Me as an old man going to the theater by myself on this day? I changed my plan to stay in my office working on my next concept.”

The books shown, which presumably will be research for this “next concept,” are Death’s End and The Dark Forest, two novels in a Chinese sci-fi trilogy by acclaimed author, Cixin Liu.

The trilogy, known as the Remembrance of Earth’s Past Trilogy, bears the following description:

“Cheng Xin, an aerospace engineer from the early twenty-first century, awakens from hibernation in this new age. She brings with her knowledge of a long-forgotten program dating from the beginning of the Trisolar Crisis, and her very presence may upset the delicate balance between two worlds. Will humanity reach for the stars or die in its cradle?”

Of course with Kojima, nothing is as clear-cut as it may seem on the surface, so if (like me) you’re hoping for a spiritual successor to Silent Hills, all may not be lost. Only time will tell what the creator has up his sleeves for the future.
