A few weeks after the game was first announced, Supermassive Games has announced that a couch co-op mode will not be available for Little Nightmares 3.
Announced at Gamescom 2023, Little Nightmares 3 is the third instalment in the horror puzzle-platformer series. Although it is not set to be released until sometime in 2024, its developers have recently revealed news on what fans can expect.
Little Nightmares 3 Will Not Feature Couch Co-op
In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, talk soon turned to how players can expect to team up with friends if they don’t wish to go solo.
Bandai Namco producer Coralie Feniello revealed that although the team did initially toy with the idea of adding a couch co-op feature, they ultimately decided to go in a different direction as to not affect the game’s “atmosphere and immersion.”
“Co-op was the most requested feature from our fans, so it was really important for us to give them that,” she said. “I do think that it will add a layer to the game as well, by letting you experience it with a friend.
“But at the same time, we really want the player to experience it as they want. So that’s why we kept single player, so if you don’t play online co-op you would be able to play with AI with you.”
Online Co-op or singleplayer
Although you won’t be able to dive into the horrors side-by-side with your friend, you will be able to team up with them via online play. For game director Wayne Garland, he reveals the team thought it was more important to keep players immersed.
“We’ve been asked questions about online versus couch co-op,” Garland says.
“Couch is something that we considered, but again, when you come back to the atmosphere and the immersion that we’re trying to elicit through Little Nightmares, I think it was important for us that we stuck to our online co-op only rather than traditional more party aspects.”
