No Man’s Sky Time Loop Update Completely Changes The Genre

The latest update for No Man’s Sky is here and it adds an impressive time loop that completely changes the genre.

The Leviathan update which runs for the next six weeks will challenge the player in a roguelike expedition in search of lost Memory Fragments. Each time you discover a Fragment, a time loop will begin.

Maintaining the theme of No Man’s Sky, each time loop will be procedurally generated, which means that every new loop will be different from the last. Potentially offering near endless replayability. Well at least for the next six weeks.

This means the game essentially becomes a “roguelite” – a term used for a genre of video games involving endlessly looping gameplay, procedural generated levels, and persistent upgrades across each run.

So Hello Games seems to have completed changed the genre of No Man’s Sky with this update!

Furthermore, there is an additional side-quest within the Leviathan update. Players can participate to help a Specialist Polo to research the time loops. Taking part in the research will result in Memory Fragments becoming more of a challenge.

By completing the expeditions, players will be rewarded with Temporal Starship Trial, a Whalestalker Cloak, an Organic Frigate for their base, as well as various other upgrades and more.

On the PlayStation Blog, Hello Games leading man, Sean Murray said: “We’ve really enjoyed putting this expedition together and are excited at the prospect of thousands of PlayStation Travellers working as an inter-galactic team to free themselves from the continuum… even if they do have to die a bunch of times to achieve it!
