An official F1 NFT and crypto-powered racing game, F1 Delta Time, has shut down after three years of service.
F1 Delta Time developer Animoca Brands announced March 15 that the NFT game would be ceasing operations (thanks, Kotaku). However, players of the game might feel a bit short changed, as the closure was announced for the next day, March 16, with no prior warning this might happen.
Judging from the announcement post, it’s because the developer couldn’t renew the F1 license. So now that the game is shutting down, anyone that had any NFTs in the game will find what they own is next to useless.
Animoca Brands are providing F1 Delta Time car owners with various replacements for some of the developer’s other games. But part of the appeal of the game was likely the F1 license. Compensation for the now-worthless NFTs include things like a race pass, replacement car NFTs, and proxy assets. These proxy assets are apparently assets of value and utility for the studio’s car NFT ecosystem Revv Motorsport. Which sounds just generally vaguely useless.
All in all, this just feels like a reminder of how much of a waste of money NFTs are. They have minimal function in a lot of cases, and the minute the thing they’re tied to shuts down, they lose all their value. And considering value is the whole point of NFTs, it just seems like it’s not worth it.
