The Oscar-winning classic Citizen Kane has lost its 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, thanks to a review dating back 80 years. The strange turn of events also means that Paddington 2 is technically better than Citizen Kane [via Uproxx].
Up until yesterday, Citizen Kane had 115 registered reviews online. As you’d perhaps expect, every review of the film was a positive one, with most outlets praising even long after its release. However, an 80-year-old review by the Chicago Tribune has criticised the film for its “eccentricity”, effectively destroying its accolade of being 100% fresh. The newspaper’s “Rotten” review by “Mae Tinee” can be viewed through Newspapers.com and takes the form of a 1940s paper clipping. Here’s what the review had to say about Citizen Kane:
“You’ve heard a lot about this picture and I see by the ads that some experts think it ‘the greatest movie ever made.’ I don’t. It’s interesting. It’s different. In fact, it’s bizarre enough to become a museum piece. But its sacrifice of simplicity to eccentricity robs it of distinction and general entertainment value.”
In case you haven’t noticed yet, the reviewer’s name is a pun based pseudonym used by film critics at the time. As for why it had been added to Rotten Tomatoes in 2021? Well, the reasons aren’t exactly clear. According to archive.org, the clipping was uploaded to the Ancestry run newspaper site in March. Therefore, it’s reasonable to assume that the only reason it hasn’t been previously included is that no one realised it existed.
So, When’s The Paddington 2 Viewing Party?
While Citizen Kane’s new score is sure to upset classic cinema enthusiasts, Paddington 2 fans now have a cause to celebrate. Thanks to “Mae Tinée”, Paddington 2 is now, according to Rotten Tomatoes, a better film than Citizen Kane. The 2017 animated comedy has 244 reviews under its belt, all of which are positive. While Citizen Kane has had its 100% fresh membership card revoked, various other classics are still in attendance, like Toy Story, Singing in the Rain and The Grapes of Wrath.
Anyway, if we ever invent time travel, someone needs to show the Chicago Tribune critics Paddington 2. If they don’t like it… well, that’s a them problem.
