Despite the controversies faced by Nintendo over the upcoming new Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield games, the company is going full steam ahead in pushing the hype.
Yes, you might not be getting a full history of Pokémon to capture in the next games in the franchise, but you will be getting two new features: Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing.
Dynamaxing was shown off during a pre-E3 2019 Nintendo Direct. The new mechanic works by using a Dynamax Band, which increases a Pokémon’s size, changes the moves of the Pokémon and increases their stats in battle. It’ll also max out their attack power making your not-so-pocket monster much stronger. It lasts for three turns and can be used just once during a battle.
Gigantamaxing is the brand-new feature shown off by Nintendo. Similar to Dynamaxing, Gigantamaxing turns your Pokémon in a giant, but it goes one step further.
Gigantamaxing allows your battlers to complete a G-Max Move, something that’s specific to each Gigantamax Pokémon, and something that’ll change its appearance.
In the new video for Pokémon Sword and Shield, which you can watch below, a few Gigantmaxes are shown.
Newly-announced Pokémon Alcremie Gigantamaxes into a ginormous cake, Corviknight into a huge bird, and Drednaw into a turtle with an even-larger shell.
You will be able to catch Gigantamax Pokémon by taking part in Max Raid Battles, but they won’t be easy to come across.
The official website states: “The strange phenomenon known as Dynamaxing can only occur in specific areas of the Galar region.
While Dynamaxing seems to be a phenomenon common to the Pokémon from Galar, it’s been discovered that there’s a special phenomenon known as Gigantamaxing, too! Only certain species of Pokémon can Gigantamax—and even among such species, only rare specimens will be able to Gigantamax. The majority will keep their usual appearance when they Dynamax.
“Gigantamax Pokémon become bigger, and just like normal Dynamaxing, Gigantamaxing boosts the power of the Pokémon. It also allows each Gigantamax Pokémon to use a unique move known as a G-Max Move! Each G-Max Move is particular to a specific species of Gigantamax Pokémon, and regular Dynamax Pokémon can’t use G-Max Moves at all!”
Pokémon Sword and Shield release in November this year.
