The world has already been introduced to the DualSense, the PlayStation 5 controller which looks like a lot like a fancy lil robot guy, but we’re still in the dark about what it will bring to your gaming experience. According to the May 16th edition of the Play, Watch, Listen podcast, we could be in for a real treat.
If you haven’t turned into Play, Watch, Listen, it’s a podcast hosted by gaming personality Alanah Pearce, video games actor Troy Baker, composer Austin Wintory and developer Mike Bithell. In the most-recent episode of the show, the gang discussed the recently-revealed PS5 tech demo – and the PS5 itself.
The group were discussing music and sound effects, and how they’re captured in the real world as a basis for their in-game counterpart. Wintory discussed how the new Unreal Engine 5 promises to deliver the sound of even a single raindrop, with the game scaling up the sound to amplify this [via EggPlante].

Bithell chimed in at this point, referencing that he’s seen and used PS5 development kits, saying: “I’m just doing the thing where I Google something to see if it’s been announced yet,
“Dancing around some [Non-Disclosure Agreements] all I’m saying Austin, is you’re gonna love what they’re doing with the controller on PS5 … the DualSense stuff.”
He then went on to add that he’s already seen some tech demos which utilise the controller’s haptics, specifically relating to raindrops, also implying the controller will allow you to “feel” when it’s raining in the game.

Just quite what this means in action remains to be seen. Vibrations, perhaps? Whatever it means, I’m more hyped than ever for the PlayStation 5!

The PS5 is due to land on store shelves at some point during Holiday 2020.
