Rivet From Ratchet And Clank Is Canonically Gay, Writer Confirms

It turns out that Rivet from Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is canonically gay, according to the lead writer of the game.

It might be no surprise to hear that Ratchet and Clank has a number of queer fans in its midst. After all, if we’re being honest, the main character is a furry, a community that is filled with a range of expressions of queerness. So it should also be no surprise that the most recent lombax Rivet is gay.

To the delight of many fans, yesterday (March 29) lead writer of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart Sam Maggs tweeted out “Rivet is canonically a lesbian.” Of course, Maggs also tagged in the Ratchet and Clank wiki Twitter account. But it seems like Rivet’s page hasn’t yet been updated to reflect something which is obviously canon.

rivet is what you want her to be

Not only did Maggs confirm this, but the writer also approved of and supports the fan theory that Rivet is trans. You see, Rivet isn’t the first female lombax Ratchet has met. In fact Ratchet met a female lombax, Angela Cross, way back in the second game on the PS2. But she doesn’t have a tail, which according to A Crack In Time, is normal for a female lombax.

But Rivet does have one, so fans were wondering if that meant that Rivet is trans. When asked about it, Maggs tweeted, “I love this fan theory—I can say that I didn’t think of it when working on her initially (I’m cis and also stupid) but I am 10000% in support of it!” So essentially, Maggs has confirmed Rivet is a trans lesbian!

While this is all great to see, the conversations of Rivet did come about through slightly unfortunate means. A recent article from IGN covered a Game Developers Conference talk from Rift Apart lead Designer Mark Stuart. Part of the talk goes into how Rivet was conceived. But Stuart fails to credit all of the work that Maggs did, when she was one of the main reasons Rivet ended up as good as she is. Maggs even notes she wasn’t credited as lead writer in the game despite working on it for a year and a half.

It is incredibly great to have Rivet as a queer character. But this is still a lesson in the importance of properly crediting everyone who worked on a game. No matter how long they might have been involved.
