Sea of Thieves has had a record-breaking month thanks to the recent Pirates of the Caribbean crossover event. Ahoy me hearties!
Captain Jack Sparrow and crew sailed into Sea of Thieves last June as part of the free “Pirate’s Life Update”. In a blog post, Rare creative director Mike Chapman revealed that the online multiplayer game had reached record player numbers.
Chapman claimed that Sea of Thieves had hit 4.8 million players in the month of June. Furthermore, Sea of Thieves also topped the Steam best-sellers chart for that same month. Rare has stated that this is the most successful month for Sea of Thieves since it launched in 2018.

That’s a lot of pirates!
“The impact of A Pirate’s Life has been truly humbling, it has blown away even our wildest expectations,” said Chapman. “We’ve had a record-breaking month, with 4.8 million players in June. It is a huge moment for Sea of Thieves and the team is buzzing with the impact.”
To celebrate the record-breaking month, as part of the August update, new Pirates of the Caribbean-themed cosmetic items will be available from the Pirate Emporium. Items include a Davy Jones Cursed Costume, a Cursed Ferryman Ship Set, emotes and more.
It’s fair to say that since its launch, Sea of Thieves has improved dramatically. Hopefully following the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean crossover, it’s a sign of more special events yet to come.
