Sony has revealed a free PlayStation Plus weekend is on its way, giving you a chance to sample the PS Plus experience without the price tag.
For those unaware, PlayStation Plus is a subscription service that allows you to play online, and will offer you a few “free” games a month. Obviously, these aren’t completely free, as they’re available within the cost of your subscription. Generally speaking, PS Plus offers two PS4 games and one PS5 game a month, though this does change.
While Microsoft recently removed the need for a paid subscription to play online games on Xbox, Sony still has online play behind its PS Plus paywall. If you’re not a PS Plus subscriber but have been keen to trial the service, now might be your chance with the announcement of a free weekend of play!
The free multiplayer weekend has been revealed as part of Sony’s Days of Play event, which will see gamers play together to unlock freebies including avatars and dynamic themes. There’s not yet a date for the free weekend, but it’s hopefully coming soon.
“If you haven’t tried the online multiplayer benefit for PlayStation Plus yet, later this month, we’re hosting a free online multiplayer weekend where you’ll be able to access the online multiplayer modes in PS4 and PS5 games that you own,” writes Sony on the PlayStation Blog.
The experience should be worthwhile for new PS5 owners, or PS4 owners who haven’t yet taken the plunge with a PS Plus subscription.
If you’re a PS5 owner with an active PS Plus subscription, you’ll also have access to the PlayStation Plus Collection. The Collection is a carefully-selected bunch of PS exclusives, along with some other popular games well worth experiencing on PS5.
Titles in the Collection include Bend Studio’s Days Gone, as well as the likes of God of War, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and Resident Evil 7. It’s unclear if access to the PS Plus Collection will be included in the upcoming free multiplayer weekend, but fingers crossed it is!
