Sony Will Reportedly Increase PS5 Production To 10 Million Units

Sony is reportedly planning to up the number of PlayStation 5 units it’s creating in time for the console’s launch later this year.

It was expected that the PS5 would be made in limited quantities due to manufacturing and shipping complications. According to Nikkei Asian Review and Bloomberg, the former is now no longer a factor.

It’s now believed that PS5 production began in June, with Sony now expecting to “assemble 5 million units by the end of September and another 5 million between October and December.”

That doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s going to be 10 million consoles on store shelves at launch though, as distribution and shipping could still be a huge factor.

The reports state that “a large proportion of Sony’s consoles are made in China and sent out via sea around the world,” which could be a very serious issue when it comes to shipping the consoles in the current climate.

Still, it seems as though things are definitely moving in the right direction for the PS5. It was only a few weeks ago in April 2020, when Bloomberg reported that only a limited number of PS5 consoles could be shipping.

The publication reported that the PS5 may launch in limited numbers due to what’s expected to be a high price ticket. It was alleged that the console’s assembly partners had been told that Sony would be making 5 – 6 million PS5 units in the fiscal year ending March 2021, despite the fact the PS4 sold 7.5 million units in its first two quarters.

If the new manufacturing numbers are correct, it means we’re far less likely to see a PS5 shortage come the Holiday season. Hopefully this means that everyone who wants to get their hands on a PS5 at launch will be able to!
