Cloud Imperium Games, creator of the incredibly costly Star Citizen, has revealed the game has reached a new milestone in crowdfunding.
The crowd-funded game has hit the lofty heights of $300 million USD raised by its players, which honestly, is a figure I can’t actually comprehend.

According to Cloud’s official website, this last month has been an incredibly successful one for the team, with average donations shooting up to about $15 million USD in May – a sharp increase from April’s $4m.
On the website, Cloud Imperium Games explains just where all the money is going, writing: “As a crowd funded project, Star Citizen‘s scope is based directly on the support provided by our backers. Money pledged goes directly to the game’s development.”
Star Citizen, which has yet to see its full release, first began development back in 2011.

As reported by AltChar, some of the game’s funding likely comes from the cost of some of the in-game items. The Drake Complete Pack 2950, for example, is a premium-grade ship pack which can set players back up to $4,600 USD. For an in-game ship pack. $4,600 USD.
AltChar also notes that between May 26 and June 1 2020, Star Citizen players added another $8 million to the crowdfund. The timing here is definitely notable, as this is when the Drake Complete Pack 2950 became available.

Star Citizen is currently in its alpha 3.9 stage, and it’s not clear when the full release will ever come.
The website states: “Imagine a universe that combines the freedom of exploration, the thrill of combat, and the unique challenge of building a life in space. Star Citizen puts ultimate control in the hands of the player, whether you’re making your way as a cargo hauler, exploring the vastness of space, or scraping out a living outside the law, you will navigate through a mixture of procedurally generated and handcrafted worlds and interact with a variety of characters.

“Star Citizen is in active development. You can download and play Star Citizen Alpha 3.9 now. Additional features and updates will be released as they are developed.”
