Todd Howard revealed that players will be able to choose their own pronouns in Starfield in a recent Reddit AMA.
Bethesda’s creative director opened the floor up to fans, allowing them to ask a variety of questions. “Really excited about what the team has done with character creation here,” Howard said in response to one fan asking if character creation would be “more complicated.”
“Including choosing background, skills, etc. You also can pick your pronoun (he, she, they) and we’ve recorded all the relevant dialogue to support that choice,” Howard continued. This will be a big first for Bethesda. Previously, games like The Elder Scrolls or Fallout would have pronouns attached to gender presentation. But this will potentially allow players to customise their characters to better reflect themselves.
Howard was also able to confirm the game would receive mod support. “Our plan is to have full mod support like our previous games. Our modding community has been with us for 20 years. We love what they do and hope to see more make a career out of it.”
Hopefully Starfield will approach pronoun customisation differently than what we saw in Cyberpunk 2077. Cyberpunk ties pronouns directly to what voice option you choose, with no ability to choose gender neutral pronouns. This means that if you choose a masculine body type, but a feminine voice, your character will have she/ her pronouns. But the way your voice sounds absolutely does not equal what your pronouns or gender is. Starfield letting you choose your own pronouns could be great. Bethesda has an opportunity to learn from CD Projekt Red’s mistakes, and give players a real opportunity to live as themselves.
