Epic Games’ Fortnite has been an absolute behemoth of the gaming industry over the last couple of years. The free-to-play battle royale has earned billions of dollars for the company, and it’s one of the most-played games out there.
However, it looks like the Fortnite train might finally be pulling into the station – at least going off Twitch’s viewership numbers.
Since Fortnite first launched, Twitch has been the place to go to check out the latest updates and new content in action, and the platform’s turned everyday players into esports superstars.
The tide is turning though, as Twitch’s latest stats on Fortnite viewership show that there’s been a significant drop in people tuning in to watch others play.
TheGamer reports that Fortnite’s viewership numbers have now dropped to their lowest level in the last 18 months, with an average decline of around 9% per month since June of this year.
September saw a mammoth decline of 22.5% [via TwitchTracker], which is more than likely related to Ninja leaving the streaming platform in favour of Microsoft’s Mixer.
It’s also being reported that there’s now less than half the number of Fortnite channels streaming the game compared to the beginning of 2019.
It’s not just the Twitch crown that Fortnite’s lost this month, as the game has also been overthrown on Xbox Live. The Epic Games title has appeared on the top spot of Xbox Live’s most-played titles since summer 2018, but no longer.
As posted to ResetEra, the Gears 5 Ultimate Edition, which has been available to play since September 5, has swooped in to steal the title of most-played Xbox Live game. This is a seriously impressive feat when you stop to consider all the games over the past 12 months that haven’t managed to do that.
Is this the end of Fortnite?
