After its initial reveal during the 2018 Game Awards, The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe is now ready to release in early 2022.
The release window was confirmed by developer Crows Crows Crows through a video on its Twitter account. The video is of course narrated by Kevan Brighting, narrator of the original Stanley Parable. It has a very sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek tone to it, asking the question, “What does it mean to be a video game developer?” and answering with, “It means lying.”
While the voiceover plays, the video highlights the numerous times the game was delayed. The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe was meant to release in 2019, but was delayed to 2020, but then subsequently to 2021, and now finally 2022.
Crows Crows Crows is confident the updated version of the game will be released next year. The update trailer also points towards the game’s website, where more updates will be available soon. The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe is an updated version of the original. It has added new endings, choices, and secrets to the game. Visuals have been improved to match modern technology, and accessibility options have been added too.
While the trailer pokes fun at itself, it is a reminder of how difficult video game development is. What was most likely meant to be an uncomplicated improvement of the original ended up taking three years longer than originally planned. Video game development is lying to people, but it’s very rarely ever on purpose.
