Tom Holland Is In Uncharted Thanks To Spider-Man Homecoming

It seems that Tom Holland got his role as Nathan Drake in Uncharted through playing the games while shooting Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Uncharted is obviously an incredibly popular series. It’s one of Sony’s tentpole franchises, with the PS5 release of the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection out later this month. But it turns out Holland, star of the upcoming Uncharted film, only played the games for the first time in 2016. Speaking at Sony’s CES keynote event, the Spider-Man actor spoke about how he discovered the acclaimed series.

“I hadn’t discovered the games until I started making Spider-Man: Homecoming,” Holland said. “One of the luxuries of making these films is that they’re made by Sony, and one of the luxuries of working for Sony is PlayStation. So all the actors’ trailers were outfitted with the best TVs and the latest PlayStations, and one of the games they gave me was Uncharted.”

And so in turn, he started playing through the Uncharted games with his best friend. “As soon as we started we couldn’t stop. I remember them trying to drag me out of my trailer, I was like ‘No no no, we’re about to complete this mission.’” Holland was accompanied by Tom Rothman, CEO and chairman of Sony Pictures’ film division, at the Sony CES keynote.

With Holland quickly falling in love with the games, Rothman and he began talking about Holland potentially appearing in the film. The Uncharted film has been in development hell for a long time. Various actors have been attached to the Nathan Drake role, including Nathan Fillion, and Chris Pratt. Mark Wahlberg, who is now playing Sully in the film, was also cast as Drake at one point in time. And with Holland being much younger than Drake, it turned into a prequel film. Akin to the flashbacks we saw in Uncharted 3 and 4. You can watch the full presentation in the video above starting at the 8:40 mark.

We won’t have to wait too long to find out how the Uncharted film is. As it finally releases February 18.
