Minecraft: Story Mode is a brilliantly charming episodic game developed by the now-closed Telltale Games, but it’s also one of the most expensive games you can buy right now.
The 2015 title has recently been spotted for sale at an eye-watering $100 USD PER episode on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 store, which begs the question: why?!
Well it turns out there’s a pretty good reason for it…sort of.
Last year we saw the horrifically sad closure of Telltale Games in which over 200 people lost their jobs.
Right now it seems that Telltale’s games are slowly being removed from the likes of Steam and other digital storefronts, and Xbox is preparing for the same.
According to a post on social media, the huge price tags are down to the need to deter people from buying the episodes, while still allowing those who own the game to download it at will.
Minecraft: Story Mode is scheduled to be delisted on all platforms by June 25th 2019.
“All of Minecraft: Story Mode content was removed from sale on each digital storefront ahead of that happening,” reads the statement.
“In the process of removing these items for sale, on the Xbox 360 platform only, existing Minecraft: Story Mode players became unable download their remaining episodes.
“From working with the Xbox 360 platform, the only solution to this situation is to re-list the downloadable content for purchase. So, to assist existing customers, all the downloadable Episodes for the two Minecraft: Story Mode titles are temporarily re-listed but, to deter new purchases, they will be re-listed at a very high price!”
The post goes on to warn potential buyers to stay away from the pricey episodes, saying: “The price shown is a real list price, please do not buy the content, if you do, you will be charged the amount shown,
“This is simply the only mechanism available to facilitate players being able to download their remaining episodes prior to servers shutting down.”
Although the game was removed by Microsoft, it remains on the Xbox 360 storefront to give owners a chance to download the episodes.
If you own the license to the games and you want to get them on your Xbox 360, you best act fast!
