Netflix’s The Witcher has skyrocketed the franchise back into the limelight, and although a fourth game in the CD Projekt Red series was pretty much off the cards, it’s tentatively hoped that a new game could really be happening.
Despite the mammoth success of the CD Projekt Red games, the company failed to reach a new deal with author of The Witcher novels, Andrezej Sapkowski. With no deal, it was believed that another addition to the game series would pretty much never happen.
However, just a few weeks ago, Sapkowski and CD Projekt Red managed to strike up a new deal. The company announced that on December 20, 2019, they’ve “entered into an agreement which solidifies and reinforces [CD Projekt Red’s] relationship with Mr. Andrzej Sapkowski – author of The Witcher saga.”
The company confirmed the agreement “satisfies and fully clarifies the requirements and expectations of both parties in light of previously concluded agreements,” meaning there’ll be future cooperation between the two.
Not only does a new deal pave the path for The Witcher 4, but so does interest from players. Thanks to Netflix’s new series, the player count and number of hours played of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt have skyrocketed, with over 100,000 people playing the game on Steam on Jan 1st 2020.
Considering The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is now a pretty old game, that’s some seriously impressive stuff.
The Netflix show itself is also smashing the competition, with Business Insider reporting it’s now the second most popular Netflix series in the US. Not only that, but the show has surpassed The Mandalorian to become the biggest TV series in the world right now.
So…The Witcher 4? Yep. It’s looking pretty darn likely from where I’m sitting.
