Back in 2016, Nick Pearce’s “The Forgotten City” became the first-ever mod to win a Writers’ Guild Award. Praised for its in-depth storytelling and complex puzzles, the mod almost felt like an actual Bethesda release. As a result, the modder started work on a standalone version of the mod back in 2017. Four years later, The Forgotten City has finally transitioned from a mod to a fully-fledged video game. Here’s what Nick Pearce had to say about the project and its developmental journey [via Reddit]:

“The last 4.5 years have been terrifying, exhilarating, creatively satisfying, and all-consuming. They’ve also been super productive: We’ve re-written the script (it’s now twice as long), and added new characters, quests, twists, endings, gameplay mechanics, as well as professional voice acting and a new orchestral score.

“Whatever happens next, I’m really proud of how The Forgotten City turned out, and I’m really glad I took the leap!”

It’s needless to say that the original The Forgotten City was an impressive mod. However, now that the game has ditched its Skyrim dependence, the experience looks more unique than ever. Here’s a short synopsis from the game’s Steam page:

What is The Forgotten City?

“Travel 2,000 years into the past and relive the final days of a cursed Roman city, where if one person sins, everyone dies. Unravel the mystery at the city’s heart by exploiting its deadly time loop, questioning locals, exploring, and solving puzzles. The fate of the city is in your hands.”

Hopefully, this standalone game allows the project’s original concept to flourish. It’s also worth mentioning that despite being originally a PC port, The Forgotten City is set to release on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5 on July 28th. A Nintendo Switch port of the game will also be available later this year!
