Bethesda Says Fallout 76 Should Hopefully Last ‘Forever’

Fallout 76 is set to be one of the biggest games of the year, and Bethesda top dog Pete Hines has stated he wants the game to last “forever.”

In an interview with Metro, Hines stated: “I’m not being ironic. Like, forever. Because other people have said, ‘Is your timeline two years or five years?’ And I said, ‘Well, they’re still playing Morrowind and you go online and look at how many people are playing Fallout 4 and Skyrim.

“Those games have been out for four and seven years, and there are literally hundreds of thousands of people playing those games every single day, every single month.”

He’s not wrong there, but will Fallout 76 really reach those lofty heights?

Speaking of some of the criticism of Fallout 3, Hines went on to say: “The big consumer reaction when we launched that game was that they were all upset that it had an ending.

“And we were like, ‘All the previous games had an ending! We thought we were sticking to what that franchise is…’ But they didn’t want an ending and we had a couple of DLCs in the works but the third one we did we were like, ‘Well, we need a DLC that removes the ending of the game and allows you to continue on’.”

As for the story, Fallout 76 will be the closest we’ve ever gotten to the actual nuclear fallout. Vault 76, which the game is named after, is one of the earliest vaults to have opened, just 20 years after the nuclear bombs were dropped.

Because Fallout 76 is based so early on in the history of Fallout, almost everything about civilization has been left in ruin. There has yet to be any effort towards rebuilding society, so during Fallout 76 it’ll be your responsibility to help bring the world back together.

What’s interesting is that despite the nuclear fallout being just 20 years prior to the start of Fallout 76, fewer humans have had the chance to take advantage of the world’s resources.
