Destiny 2 developer Bungie has issued a statement regarding the recent leak of plans from the Republican-backed US Supreme Court’s plans to overthrow Roe v Wade, a ruling that protects abortion rights in the country.
Yesterday, May 4, Bungie put out a tweet reading “Standing up for reproductive choice and liberty is not a difficult decision to make, and Bungie remains dedicated to upholding these values.”
This was paired with a link to a more fleshed out statement, in which it reaffirmed the sentiment. “At Bungie we believe that everyone has a right to choose their own path and that freedom is expressed across all facets of life,” reads the post. “The leaked draft decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade represents a blow to freedom in America and is a direct attack on human rights.
“By creating a divide between those who possess the fundamental right to make healthcare decisions that are right for them, and those who do not possess that same freedom, this decision, should it become final, will have far-reaching consequences that will be felt for generations across socio-economic lines. Bungie is committed to safeguarding the freedom and privacy of its employees and providing support to all employees affected by this decision.“
Bungie then provided to various organisations that support rights to healthcare, such as URGE (Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity), Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice , NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation, and In Our Own Voice.
how did bungie handle responses to the statement?
Unsurprisingly, a number of people replied saying things like “Can we just stick to making video games?” To which Bungie very aptly replied: “Never.” Another user suggested that Bungie needs to stop politics, saying that it’s irrelevant to both business and game development. Bungie again very accurately replied“It’s very relevant to the lives of our employees. We will never stop.“
It’s great to see a massive company like Bungie take a stand on something like Roe v Wade. And currently it’s the only major studio to do so. Hopefully more will follow suit. As this situation does threaten the safety of a huge number of people in the US.
