Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 reboot Captain Price wanted the popular character to have a scouse accent and to be a Liverpudlian superhero.
The modern-day Captain Price is played by Barry Sloane. However, the Captain Price that starred in the original Modern Warfare trilogy was Billy Murray (not that one).
However, the role was recast with the 2019 reboot.
Captain Price is a legend!
The previous Captain Price had a cockney (London) accent. You know, the accent that certain parts of the world believe all English people sound like.
In most instances actors from, let’s say the United States will portray the “aright guv’na” stereotype.
Sometimes we might get a Yorkshire imitation, but for the most part, it’s the Dick Van Dyke cockney rendition.
However as reported by NME, the new Captain Price in the Modern Warfare reboot was really pushing for the character to have a scouse accent.
Furthermore, Sloane used his belief that there aren’t enough “scouse superheroes” as his motivation.
Sadly, for Sloane, the chiefs at Infinity Ward wanted to maintain the cockney accent for the new Captain Price. “In the auditions, I played him Scouse and I was really pushing it because we don’t have enough Scouse superheroes in my opinion,” said Sloane.
Sloane still added his own twist
He continued: “But we decided to not go down that road, and to go somewhere around where Billy did it.
Billy’s a little more clipped, a little more in the system – mine’s a little more working class, I think. I went from that perspective and put some of it in but then added aspects of myself, and I was afforded that by Infinity Ward.”
Sloane also paid tribute to his predecessor. “Murray did an incredible performance, it was amazing,” praised Sloane.
“That’s why people give a fuck about Captain Price from the get-go.
“However, I was the first actor with the opportunity to move him – physically embody that, and make it a 3D, modern version.
“I was excited, and I paid homage to him. I tried to add elements of his performance and choices, certainly in the tone.”
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is out this week!
I’m not sure if a scouse Captain Price accent would have suited the character.
Personally, I would have gone for the even more underrepresented “Up the Villa” Brummie.
