While lots of people have been praising the latest addition to the Call of Duty franchise, there are many players who’ve been review bombing CoD: Modern Warfare online.
Review bombing is a somewhat-new trend which sees people leave negative reviews en masse as a form of protest about one aspect of the game or another. The idea is often seen on Steam when a game leaves the platform to become an Epic Store exclusive.

So why are people so upset with Modern Warfare? Well, it’s all down to the game’s depiction of Russians (which actually might be one of the reasons why the game can’t be downloaded via the Russian PlayStation Store).
The game has been accused of rewriting the controversial 1991 Highway of Death attack during the Gulf War, an event which saw soldiers from the US, Canada, Britain, and France kill more than 350 soldiers.

In Modern Warfare, the Highway of Death attack isn’t committed against the Russians, but by the Russians, essentially changing how the US is depicted. Of course, people have been left pretty upset by this, with many accusing the game of being anti-Russian propaganda.
At the time of writing, Metacritic is currently sporting a low User Score of 3.3, with “Generally unfavorable reviews,” thanks to angered gamers.

One Metacritic review calls the game “disgusting Russophobic garbage, created only for one thing – stinking anti-Russian propaganda which is now pouring out of all the ‘independent’ media on the orders of their Washington masters. 0/10.”
“Absolutely disgusting propaganda,” wrote another. “Why make such games? Games should unite people and not set them against each other. What I saw in this game is an example of absolute evil, total terror!”

Others have warned potential players: “Do not buy this game, do not become sponsors of terror.”
Neither Activision nor Infinity Ward has yet commented on the controversy.
