CDPR Hints Cyberpunk 2077 Multiplayer Could Be Delayed Or Cancelled

Cyberpunk 2077 is arguably a game built on empty promises, however, the game’s planned multiplayer mode might be effectively cancelled.

During a recent strategy update, CDPR president Adam Kiciński stated that the studio was restructuring its online experience strategy across all its franchises. He also elaborated on Cyberpunk’s multiplayer prospects and how it’ll be implemented into the game [via IGN]:

Previously we hinted that our next AAA would be a multiplayer Cyberpunk game, but we have decided to reconsider this plan given our new more systemic and agile approach instead of primarily focusing on one big online experience or game we are focusing on bringing online into all of our franchises one day.”

So, what does that actually mean? Well, it’s sort of a sign that the Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer will be at least delayed, if not cancelled outright. Kiciński’s wording suggests that whatever the company had planned for CP2077 has been scrapped.

Again, this is hardly surprising, especially since Cyberpunk is still broken at its core. While the game has made a lot of headway since its release, introducing a multiplayer mode would likely distract from CDPR’s main goal of improving the game.

In a statement provided to IGN, CD Projekt Red’s PR manager, Radek Grabowki, declined to add more clarity by saying the statements in the video were “all we have to say”. However, the PR manager did draw attention to one particular statement from the strategy update, which provides some further context:

“We are building an online technology that can be seamlessly integrated into development of our future games,

“This technology will power online components we choose to introduce in our games, and will ensure we can do so without any great technological debt. With this technology in place, we can start to grow an online community — powered by our own GOG GALAXY platform — which connects gamers both inside and outside of our games.”

Hopefully, multiplayer does eventually come to Cyberpunk 2077. However, it looks like CDPR’s plans have changed, which might ultimately be for the best.
