Classic JRPG Live A Live Finally Receiving Western Release

Cult-classic JRPG Live A Live was announced to be getting the HD-2D treatment at this week’s Nintendo Direct.

Having only ever officially released in Japan, Live A Live will finally get an official release in the West on July 22, later this year. It is a turn-based JRPG set across multiple time periods with an overarching antagonist. Similarly to Octopath Traveler, another Square Enix JRPG, the story features seven stories and seven protagonists.

But in this case, it’s set over the course of multiple time periods, like the wild west, imperial China, and the distant future. One of the interesting aspects of the original game was that the various characters were designed by manga artists. This includes Detective Conan’s artist Gosho Aoyama.

As well as this, the game directly inspired the indie hit Undertale. Speaking about the announcement on Twitter, Undertale creator Toby Fox said “Super excited for this legendary RPG to come over to the west for the first time… I actually named MEGALOVANIA after the boss song from this game, MEGALOMANIA.”

Megalovania is highly regarded as an iconic theme song from Undertale. And it’s more than likely you’ve seen it come up in a meme or two or three along the way. Fox also added a small anecdote too. He said that at a concert he once went to for the game, they mixed Megalovania in with Megalomania.

Live A Live launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch, July 22, later this year.
