Kao the Kangaroo, a classic but mostly forgotten 2000s platformer, is getting the Crash and Spyro treatment with its very own reboot.
Developed by Polish studio Tate Multimedia, Kao the Kangaroo originally released for the Dreamcast in 2001, however its sequel did make it over PlayStation, Xbox and GameCube. Sadly, it never saw the same success as its contemporaries.
But now, as recently revealed by Tate Multimedia, the kangaroo is making a comeback. This new take on Kao isn’t a remake or a sequel, but a full on reboot of the franchise. It has a planned release of Summer 2022.
Kao the Kangaroo was first announced back in 2020, a year after Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2 was released on Steam. Fans of the series started a hashtag #BringKaoBack in 2019, asking Tate Multimedia to revive the franchise.
The reboot is very obviously a response to the recent revival of the more popular Crash and Spyro series. There’s even an argument to be made that the graphical style looks quite similar to both Crash 4: About Time and the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. This new Kao looks mostly similar to Round 2 rather than the original release. Round 2 was released for the PS2, and was a much more fleshed out platformer than its predecessor.
While no release date has been set, you will be able to play Kao the Kangaroo some time this summer on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
