Detective Pikachu is my favourite movie of 2019 so far, which I know is a VERY bold statement, but – let’s face it – it’s a lot less stressful to watch than Avengers: Endgame.
The first live-action foray into the world of Pokémon was a smash-hit at the box office, raking in the millions and getting butts on cinema seats the world over.

The pocket monsters that appeared to be the stuff of nightmares when shown in the reveal trailers for the movie actually turned out to be endearing, relatable and – in Mr. Mime’s case – stupidly funny.
Detective Pikachu has since often been cited as “the first good video game movie,” and it looks like we’ve got the stats to prove its greatness thanks to new figures about the highest grossing video game cinema releases.

Detective Pikachu has recently hit $429 million USD in worldwide box office takings according to tracker Box Office Mojo [via VG247], and no, it’s not being bested by Angelina Jolie’s Tomb Raider (obviously).
It’s actually the 2016 World of Warcraft movie, Warcraft, that’s taking the top spot above everyone’s favourite wise-cracking Pikachu. Warcraft‘s theatrical run ended with takings of just over $433 million, despite its poor reviews from critics.

While it’s a close race between the two gaming movie behemoths, it’s unlikely that Detective Pikachu is going to nab first place at the last moment.
The movie is still available to see in some movie theatres, but it’s on a limited final run at the moment, so if you want to go see it again you best act fast. If you haven’t even seen it for the first time then go go go!
If your local cinema isn’t showing Detective Pikachu any longer then you can pre-order the DVD and Blu-Ray, which are set to release September 16, 2019.
