Disney Shows Off Official ‘Real’ Lightsaber In Teaser Video

Disney has developed an incredibly detailed “real” Star Wars lightsaber, and I need it now! I’m pretty sure this replica lightsaber won’t cut through any metal, and it might not be ideal to use as a crime-fighting weapon (probably), but this is about as close to the real thing as we’re going to get right now.

Official replica lightsabers do exist of course, but though they do make awesome sounds and light up wonderfully, they’re not quite as impressive as this latest creation from Disney. Check it out in action in the video below!

It’s not currently known at this time whether or not this amazing lightsaber replica will be available at retail, but if it does, I expect it to be very expensive.

I mean, I might consider re-mortgaging my house to raise funds for this lightsaber, though if my wife found out I doubt I’d live long enough for it to arrive in the post.

Over on the Disney Parks website, it’s revealed that the lightsaber has been created for the upcoming Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser vacation experience, coming to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida in 2022.

Yes, that’s a new type of lightsaber Rey is holding in her hand, created by Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development,” reads the blog.

Guests who experience Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will be the first to see it in action – along with so much more – starting in 2022 when this amazing new two-night adventure debuts. Watching that lightsaber activate right before your eyes will be just one of the countless ways that, from the moment you arrive to the moment you depart, you’ll be plunged into a Star Wars story where your decisions and actions – or even the casual conversations you may have – determine how your personal journey unfolds.

So how does this amazing piece of technology work (I refuse to call it a toy). Thankfully developer and Star Wars fan Ben Ridout explained some of the technical details on Twitter.

Did Disney invent a real working lightsaber?  Yes they did,” exclaimed Ridout in a tweet.

Ridout continued: “It won’t melt through metal blast doors, or cut off your hand, but it does feature an illuminated blade that will extend and retract at the push of a button. This animation shows the concept behind the tech.

So there you have it, here’s an incredible lightsaber that we may or may not ever get to own, but at least we can marvel at its beauty.

Oh, if this lightsaber ever comes to retail, I’ll be up for reviewing it. I believe in teamwork, and this is a hit I’ll take for the team. I’m great like that.
