Doctor Who: Ncuti Gatwa Will Replace Jodie Whittaker Next Year

Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa has been cast in Doctor Who as the next incarnation of the titular Time Lord, replacing current star Jodie Whittaker.

The BBC announced yesterday (May 8) that Gatwa would be taking over the iconic role as the 14th Doctor. This coincides with Russell T Davies returning to the program as showrunner in 2023.

The casting also marks the first time a black actor will be playing the role full time. Jo Martin made a brief appearance in the show starting in 2020 as a previously unknown iteration of the Doctor. But she wasn’t on the show full time.

how is gatwa feeling?

There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling,” said Gatwa in an official statement on the Doctor Who website. “A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care.

I will endeavour my utmost to do the same.  Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true.

Davies himself also provided a statement, saying “The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds.”

Of course, Davies did anticipate that fans are dying to know more, but he said they’re “rationing” themselves for now. And that Whittaker’s “epic finale” is yet to come. New companions are also set to be introduced with the new series as well.

Gatwa’s character on Sex Education is incredibly popular. So it’s very exciting to see what he will bring to the role of the Doctor.
