Remember the classic Driver series? It’s coming back! Though perhaps not as you might expect. Driver is coming back as a TV series.
Yes, that’s right, Driver is coming back as a TV series. More accurately, a live-action TV series. Driver was first released for the original PlayStation in 1999. Before spawning some not-so-great sequels. Still, it seems to be a series looked upon quite fondly. Well, I suppose as long as you don’t mention that infamous car park driving test!
Announced on Ubisoft.com, the Driver license is still owned by Ubisoft and the live-action series is coming to a new streaming platform called Binge. The series, which is also being developed by the folks at Binge, is scheduled to launch in 2022.
The story of Driver will tell the tale of an NYPD detective who goes undercover as a getaway driver. I’m also willing to bet that the cop will be a loose cannon who doesn’t play by the rules.
You may not get to watch Driver
If you’ve never heard of Binge, then you’re not alone. From what I can tell, this is an Australian streaming platform not available in most countries outside of its region. So quite naturally, this Driver series will have a much smaller audience compared to the likes of Netflix, Amazon, or Apple TV.
According to Binge, this is a platform that will air “original series and shows created for gaming fans.”
“Our mission at Ubisoft is to bring our games to life in new and exciting ways and create content set in the world, culture, and community of gaming,” said Ubisoft film and television head of TV development, Danielle Kreinik. “Working with Binge will allow us to bring a Driver series directly to the audience who is most passionate about seeing this franchise come to life.”
Hopefully, this Driver series might come to other streaming platforms in regions across the world. Because at the very least, I’m intrigued.
