‘Duke Smoochem’ Turns Iconic British Memes Into First Person Shooter

Someone is working on a Duke Nukem fan game called Duke Smoochem, and it might just be the most British game ever made.

It’s probably safe to say that England has a very particular sense of humour. It can be quite dry, very sarcastic. And it often revolves around a general feeling of ‘this place is a bit crap really, ey?’ There are so many small cultural moments that don’t make their way out of the country.

This Duke Nukem fan game, Duke Smoochem 3D, is trying to capture many of them as best it can. As you can see in the April progress video below, developer Dan Douglas has essentially made a game that is what it’s like living in England. Demons and angry seagulls everywhere, Rustlers microwave burgers, and day time TV.

While it likely won’t make sense to anyone outside of England, there are so many funny references in the game. Like the incredible Hacker T Dog “We’re just innocent men,” bit that recently went viral. You can also head into WHSmith to pick up a copy of your favourite magazine like Railway Magazine, featuring Francis Bourgeois. You can even pay a visit to the Great British Bake-Off tent. The amount of references and locales Duke Smoochem has certainly makes this a game that will likely only resonate with the Brits. But it will definitely resonate hard.

Most recently, Douglas shared that Lee Jackson, composer of the Duke Nukem 3D theme “Grabbag” composed a piece of music for Duke Smoochem. Which is the track that players in the trailer above. The tweet announcing this is part of a longer thread showing the development of the game. And it’s well worth perusing just to see the scope of this ridiculous and amazing project.
