The game is set to be a similar length to the first game, which released back in 2015. During a conversation with Wccftech, the game’s lead designer, Tymon Smektala, stated that the game’s length would also depend on the player’s playstyle and skill [via Comicbook].

Smektala also delved into the game’s length in terms of hours, giving us a more realistic sense of how long the game will be:

If you rush it, you should be able to finish the story in roughly 20 hours. But to see it all, you’d have to spend 2-3 times more time than that. Our opening area alone can last for over 7-8 hours if you want to explore every nook and cranny, so there’s absolutely a lot to play here.

While Smektala’s estimations might make the game sound vast, they’re actually on par with the first game. Dying Light takes around 17 hours to complete, with its various side quests bumping it up significantly.

Not every player will spend 50 plus hours in a game mastering it beyond completion. Yet, the option is often there, especially when it comes to big-budget releases.

Dying Light 2’s lead designer was also asked about the game’s dynamic encounters and whether they’d be akin to the likes of Red Dead Redemption 2. The game designer confirmed that the game would feature narrative-driven encounters, which will accompany the game’s main plot:

Absolutely! There are a lot of stories in Dying Light 2’s world. We were holding back with this aspect of the game, as we wanted to use it as icing on the main story’s narrative cake. We have introduced them relatively recently, roughly in the second half of last year, and they’ve added a lot of life and vibrancy to our world.
