A devoted Tomb Raider 2 fan is hard at work on an unofficial remake of the classic, and it looks better than you could possibly imagine!
Being a fan of the Tomb Raider series since the original, my intrigue took over when YouTube recommended a playthrough of the remake, which is being created by the talented Nicobass. For the next 40 minutes I was glued to the screen as this remake that looked totally professional.
The gameplay video was uploaded to the YouTube channel of Gabriel Oliveira, who has clearly put in a lot of practice into this demo and seems to know it very well (other than one accidental death). Check it out below.
However the remake itself comes from Nicobass. Judging by their blog posts, the fan-made remake has been in development since 2016.
The demo (which is free to download) allows you to play through the remade opening chapter “The Great Wall.” The gameplay style very much reminded me of 2007’s Tomb Raider Anniversary which released for PS3 and Xbox 360.
The gameplay video (above) shows off a look at the various character models that have been created for the demo, including different Lara Croft outfits, a tiger, T-Rex, spiders and more.
Yet it’s the demo itself which is truly amazing to behold. The animations looked great, the visuals looked fantastic, the music was nostalgic and the exploration looked fun AF.
Puzzles, combat, voice acting, collectibles and more have also been incorporated into the demo. It even has a photo mode!
At the very end of the demo, the creator teases that the remake will continue to be developed. I really hope that it does and that Square Enix doesn’t shut this project down, because I’m so impressed with the work that has gone into this.
With the Tomb Raider series celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, watching this fan-made remake really makes me hope that Square Enix will develop a remake of its own.
If Square does reveal plans to develop a Tomb Raider 2 remake, it really needs to hire the services of Nicobass, because imagine what could be done with the official resources!
