Square Enix’s isekai RPG Forspoken finally has a release date of May 24, 2022, as announced at The Game Awards.
Originally titled as Project Athia, Forspoken was announced in 2020 as the first title from Luminous Productions. The studio was formed out of the development team that worked on Final Fantasy XV, and was founded by that game’s director Hajime Tabata.
Since the announcement of Forspoken, we haven’t seen much of it. The latest trailer shown at The Game Awards does show off more gameplay, but it still isn’t exactly clear how the game will play. Though now hair and facial movements are looking markedly improved since the last trailer. New abilities such as invisibility were shown off. And there also seems to be some kind of hoverboard you can get around on.
The particle effects continue to look ridiculously impressive and flashy. In previous trailers the character models facial movements have looked very stiff and lifeless, and hair hasn’t looked great either. The game is being made in the Luminous Engine, the engine that proved notoriously problematic for Final Fantasy XV’s development. The fact they haven’t shown a trailer purely consisting of gameplay might be cause for concern.
Uncharted creator Amy Hennig is a writer on the project, alongside Gary Whitta, Allison Rymer, and Todd Stashwick. And Bear McCreary and Garry Schyman are composing music for the game.
Forspoken is releasing on PC, and is a console exclusive on PS5 for two years from release.
