Firefly is one of the most beloved sci-fi series of all time, and it could be making a much-deserved comeback thanks to a reconsideration by Fox.
Joss Whedon’s cult TV favourite Firefly is reportedly being considered for a revival by Fox after it was cut short during its first season.
The sci-fi TV show premiered back in 2002, and while it was supposed be 14 episodes long, it ended up only getting 11 – much to viewers’ dismay.
Over the years, committed fans have petitioned and campaigned for Fox to pick up the story again and continue it, but despite many setbacks it appears Firefly could finally be getting the Swan Song it always deserved.
Fox’s Entertainment President, Michael Thorn appeared at Tuesday’s (January 7) Television Critics Association press tour, where he was asked by The Wrap whether or not there was ever a chance fans would see more of the space-western.
“The macro answer is, any time we look at one of our classic titles, if there’s a way to reinvent it for today so it’s as resonant now as the original was, and is, to the fans, we’re wide open,” he explained.
“I loved Firefly, personally, and I watched every episode. I didn’t work on it, but I loved the show. It had come up before, but we had The Orville on the air and it didn’t make sense for us to have, as a broadcast network who is very targeted, to have two space franchises on our air.”
That sounds like a revival is definitely something Fox is interested in if you ask me…
Thorn continued: “In this crowded marketplace, if you can start with some kind of brand awareness and IP that has a vocal support and, in this case, a crazy, passionate love for it, you’re ahead of the game.”
He then further fuelled speculation by ending the question with: “I would love to see, like, an eight or 10-episode limited adventure in that universe.”
I mean, that isn’t a 100% confirmation of its return, but it’s also not a big fat nope either. So fans, keep being as vocal as possible, and if you dream big enough it can happen!
