If you haven’t heard, the Mars rover is officially deceased. The car-sized robot named Opportunity, who discovered water on Mars, hadn’t communicated with NASA since summer 2018 following a storm on the red planet.
Despite NASA’s attempts to revive “Oppy,” the plug has finally been pulled. On Wednesday, February 13, the US space agency announced the ‘death’ of Oppy, who left us all with some incredibly sad last words: “My battery is low and it’s getting dark.”
RIP, Oppy.
Before you reach for the tissues, there might be light at the end of the tunnel for Oppy, as Apex Legends players want to have her (yes, her) memorialised in the game.
On Reddit, a post called: “Petition to make Pathfinder say, ‘My battery is low and it is getting dark’ when low on health” has gotten nearly 50k upvotes at the time of writing, with thousands of people agreeing with the poster.
The thread starts: “As a science nerd, I think it’d be pretty cool to pay some homage to NASA’s Opportunity rover. Thoughts?”
The idea has taken root in the minds’ of Apex players, who have added their own ideas for the homage.
“Would be more fitting of bleedout since your vision is indeed getting darker and darker when approaching death,” commented one Redditor. “EDIT: And I thought that we should apply the concept of voicelines when close to bleedout to every character, that would be amazing (and I’m wondering why it’s not a thing yet).”
Another suggested: “Wraith: The Void is calling / I didnt see this coming
“Mirage: Well, this sucks.
“Caustic: How interesting, what valuable data.
“Bangalore: My condition is FUBAR, Need and assist! (Or some other video game military jargon).”
Considering Oppy gave us 15 faithful years of service, and has helped the scientific community immensely, I couldn’t think of a more fitting way to remember her.
